Climate change considerations for traders
In October 2023, the government announced a far-reaching ban on single use plastic. This states that there will be a ban on single-use plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks, and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers. This affects retailers, takeaways, food vendors and the hospitality industry. Find out more about the ban on single use plastics in England (gov.uk)
Since the government's ban on supplying plastic straws and stirrers came into force in England on 1 October 2020, we have been asking all vendors at our events to abide by the following green credentials as a form of best practice:
- No single use packaging
- No plastic straws or stirrers
- No non-recyclable cutlery or trays
- Recyclable coffee cups/plastic cups and plastic glasses
- Vendors to offer discounts for visitors who bring their own plates and drinking vessels to the event
You will not be permitted to attend if you do not adhere to the government’s ban on single use plastic. Spot checks may be made on event days and, if a discrepancy is found, you may be asked to leave our event.
We hope you will be able to continue to support the efforts of our climate change vision to work towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030 (direct council emissions) and to ensure that the borough is net zero by 2050. View the council's climate change strategy 2024 - 2028
