Planning jobs

Thank you for showing an interest in working for Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council.

We are in the process of transforming our Planning Service under the stewardship of our dynamic Director (Community and Development Services). This presents a fantastic opportunity to establish a new team of senior professionals, able to provide a first class service to our customers.

At Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, we have a workforce of around 450 committed staff, delivering services to our customers – whether they are residents, business, partners, councillors or other stakeholders.

We pride ourselves as a flexible employer, and support and develop our people to help them maximise their potential. We have a track record of fast tracking career progression within the organisation.

We are an employer of choice and offer a wide range of roles, at all levels. From housing, planning, legal, surveying, accounting and digital roles to refuse collectors and gardeners, we want to recruit, develop and retain highly skilled people who are committed, capable and strive to achieve the best outcomes for the borough and its residents.

Staff who have recently joined us from the public and private sectors have said at inductions that we are a ‘friendly’, ‘supportive’, ‘helpful’ and a ‘happy’ organisation.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Bill Cullen, Chief Executive

Hinckley and Bosworth is a fantastic environment for ambitious professional planners to gain a breadth of experience across a multitude of projects, ranging from regeneration to conservation, rural to urban, and residential to employment and major infrastructure projects.

We are home to the headquarters of some iconic companies, such as Triumph Motors, the world class Mira Technology Park Enterprise zone and DPD who occupy Europe’s largest logistic complex. We have a thriving town centre, a state of the art leisure centre and good night-time economy. We have good quality state and private schools, good range of housing in great locations. We have some top tourism destinations including Twycross Zoo, Mallory Park racing circuit and Triumph visit centre.

There are opportunities across our three teams – Development Management, Planning Policy and Major Projects – where a ‘one team’ approach is embraced.

Taking up any of these positions will enable you to be involved in the work of other teams, gain key experience, and become part of teams delivering major change in the borough.

The Borough Council’s planning service is undergoing change and we are looking for dynamic and motivated professional planning officers to fill key team leader and senior positions within the service to drive forward that change with a focus on delivering better outcomes for our customers.

If you are ambitious for Hinckley and Bosworth as a community and place, and want to apply your experience, expertise and motivation to make a positive difference. These could be the opportunities that are made for you.

Development management

Our development management roles offer a diverse and interesting caseload on both major and householder applications, with the opportunity to lead on complex planning applications and appeal casework at team leader level.

There is access to big and exciting projects from day one, and opportunities to be the lead role for the council and progress quickly from senior planner to team leader.

The Development Management Team currently has about 60 major planning applications and is key to the delivery of growth in the borough. As part of that team, you’ll be key to leading the delivery of significant place making developments, such as the sustainable urban extensions at Barwell and Earl Shilton, which are expected to deliver over 4000 new homes and key community infrastructure.

These are fantastic greenfield projects a true opportunity to create new places.

Planning policy

The council is progressing its Local Plan to submission in early 2023 and now is the perfect opportunity to join that team and lead the council through the examination to a successful adoption and appearing at the public hearings on behalf of the council.

There is a housing target of circa 12500 new homes for the Local Plan period 2020-2039.

The role provides an opportunity to implement real changes for residents in the borough, helping to shape the future of the borough and play a key role in the wider cross-boundary strategic planning agenda.

With the level of planned future growth and investment, your work will be interesting and varied and provide the challenges you have been looking for.

Major projects

The Major Projects Team is the key lead on major infrastructure and regeneration projects. You will be expected to be the council’s lead on the Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange which is a NSIP, as well as facilitating strategic network improvements to the A5 to improve accessibility.

The council is also developing ambitious plans for the regeneration of Hinckley and already runs a successful heritage action zone (HAZ) and supports the Business Improvement District, which is in its third term.

Hinckley National Rail Freight Interchange will provide exposure to a nationally significant project, an opportunity to experience the development consent order process and an opportunity to work with partners in responding to the proposal.

With plenty of scope to be involved in other projects, this is the opportunity to make your mark on Hinckley and Bosworth. Working in partnership with business communities, stakeholders and a range of organisations is seen as key to continuing the economic recovery of the borough so you must be good at establishing and maximising returns from such relationships.

Personal development

The council supports continual professional development attendance and relevant professional membership fees. We have a continuous and responsive approach to enabling good performance from our staff on the part that really matters – good relationships between individuals and their managers that drive excellent performance and ultimately better outcomes for the residents of Hinckley and Bosworth.
